His Name Is Our Name

I have been thinking a lot about the name of Jesus lately, and all that it encompasses. As it turns out His Name means so much more than one could even imagine. There is so much power in The Name of Jesus if we would just realize it and use The Name He gave us we would be able to accomplish so much more.

After all, Jesus did say in John 14 verses 12 - 14, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

You see here that the key is His Name. The Name is what will unlock the power within us to do the things which Jesus said we would be able to do. And just in case you are second-guessing your authority to use His Name, look at what Jesus said in Matthew 28 verses 18 - 19, “All authority is given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore…” Did you catch that? Immediately after He announced His authority on earth He delegated that authority to us! He gave us His Name! And He also told us what to do with it. He said, “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My Name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Notice also that He didn’t say here that they might cast out demons, or if they lay hands on the sick they might recover. No, Jesus said if we take the authority given to us and use His Name we WILL cast out demons, and if we lay hands on the sick they WILL recover.

He gave us the authority to use His Name to do all these things and more. But it gets even better than that! Have you ever thought about how we were given this authority? What gives us the right to use His Name? The obvious answer, of course, is Jesus gave it to us. While that is true and wonderful, it gets better and even more intimate than that.

When you accepted Jesus and were born again, you entered into a new covenant with Him. Now think of this covenant as a marriage contract. When two people get married, they become one, and the woman normally takes her husband's name. After the ceremony is complete and the marriage certificate (contract) is signed, the husband and wife are legally united as one.

When Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross He signed His part of the contract, and you sign your part when you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. When both signatures are recorded you become united as one and take His Name and all the power and authority that comes with it! Think about that for a second, we are married to Jesus and are united with Him as one. So now when you do or say something you have the same power and authority as if Jesus Himself said it because His Name is your name!
